You may notice condensation on your rooflight window because warm air which holds more moisture tends to rise and then liquefy when it comes into contact with a cool surface. Condensation can cause a number of problems within a building particularly interstitial condensation which can occur inside the roof s structure. Our photograph at left shows severe alligatoring on a nearly flat low slope roof that also was relying on tar and roof cement to try to stop parapet wall leaks. Condensation is more prevalent in new homes.

Reducing moisture can be achieved by completing actions such as using extractor fans when cooking drying clothes outside or in a tumble dryer or opening roof windows when possible. So the best way of preventing condensation is to reduce this amount of moisture. Interstitial condensation creates structural damping and subsequent damage that occurs when moist air penetrates inside the hidden space within an enclosed wall roof or floor cavity of a home. When there is a big temperature difference between the outdoors and indoors like during winter this can result in condensation on windows.

Condensation builds when there s an excess of moisture in the air. Condensation and roof windows due to the position of roof windows they are more exposed to the elements. The problem however usually isn t the roof window. Flat roofs and low slope roofs also face potentially serious condensation problems that can in turn lead to costly rot or mold damage in buildings.
